I have visited the site of the old Clifton Springs pier once before, but I found myself close by this week and it was close to sunset, so I dropped by again. The light was amazing this time, with a very heavy overcast sky and a tiny sliver of orange glow from the setting sun. The water was very still and providing a perfectly reflective surface for my image. I love it when everything comes together while I'm out in the elements capturing beautiful scenes. (2459)

PULLING OUT OF QUEENSTOWN

This lovely old steam train was captured pulling out of the Queenstown railway station, on its way along the scenic route towards to the west. This is an iconic railway that is a must-see tourist attraction if you find yourself on this side of Tasmania. Unfortunately, my schedule didn't have time to hop aboard, but it does give me an opportunity to return and take the much-wanted ride next time. (2458)

I LONG FOR THIS

Being in the mid of winter now, this photography seems out of place, but back in our summer, this is how it felt. A blue sky, with a blazing sun, heating the stones on the beach at Torquay. Having had a day that didn't reach double digits in temperature today, looking at this image seems so unusual, but one that I really long for! (2457)

THE WALK
Liffey Falls, Tasmania, Australia

The walk in from the car park to the Liffey Falls takes 20 or so minutes and is very picturesque. There are a number of steps down to the river at the end of a relatively easy walk. I found it interesting to talk to a number of other visitors travelling in the opposite direction and finding out where they all came from. Amazingly, they were all from interstate, like me and thought that Tasmania was a fantastic place to explore. I couldn't agree more! (2456)

MY FAVOURITE SUBJECT

I would like to think that this beach, on the south side of Philip Island was named after me, but I'm pretty sure it isn't. But that said, it is wonderful spot to visit early in the morning and shoot a beautiful sunrise. A low tide and small pools of water left behind on the beach are one of my favourite subjects for capturing the reflections of a colourful sky. (2455)

THE REPLICA

I walked along the beach at Clifton Springs late this afternoon and spotted a piece of sculpture up on the hill behind me. When I climbed to the top, I found this steel paddle wheel replica beside coiled ropes and a wooden wheel. The sun was almost ready to go down below the horizon as it poked its head through the structure and produced a lovely sunburst. There was very little wind tonight, which is a bit of a treat for me at this time of the year and made for a great experience. (2454)

HOW FANTASTIC
Loch Ard Gorge, Victoria, Australia

I have just returned home from a lovely weekend at Port Campbell, near the end of the Great Ocean Road. I drove past the Twelve Apostles tourist site and stopped at Loch Ard Gorge. This is another wonderful spot on this amazing coastline, where a small opening to the sea widens into a beautiful and secluded gorge. Secluded, that is except for a half million tourists that were there to watch the sunset also, so it was hard to take a photo without a few of them in frame. But that said, the few I did leave in this pictures show the scale of the site, and just how fantastic it is. (2453)

ISLAND LIFE

Griffiths Island, at Port Fairy, is separated from the mainland by a river on one side and this small stretch of water on the other. There is a very short land bridge across to the island and a lovely walking track around the 31 ha land mass. A lighthouse built in 1859 on the seaward side is now the only manmade object on the island and the only permanent inhabitants are birds and animals, including swamp wallabies. I was lucky enough to be able to capture the sunrise that split the mainland on the left and the island on the right. (2452)

HIDING IN THE GRASS

It felt like I was hiding from someone, as I crouched down to take a shot of the Cowes beach from within a lovely patch of grass bushes. The day wasn't all that good, with a storm fast approaching and very dark clouds overhead, but I managed a few shots and made it home to tell the tale. (2451)

VERY WORTHWHILE

I was very fortunate to be able to stay in a little cottage on the banks of the River Derwent at New Norfolk. My morning photo expedition consisted of getting out of bed and wandering across the backyard of the property and setting up my tripod and camera. A little colour in the sky made the minimal effort very worthwhile. (2450)

MOSS COVERED

Just below the wonderful Nelson Falls, on the west coast of Tasmania, the water continues on its journey through the dense forest of the national park. The moss covered rocks give a hint at how dark and wet this area normally is, although the sun did make an appearance while I was there. (2449)

MESMERISING

I found it mesmerising, sitting on the shore at Williamstown, looking across the bay towards the Melbourne skyline and watching the tethered boats swing around on their moorings. They all faced the same way, and as the tide changed their direction changed too. I also loved the different colours of the little vessels, with no two looking the same. (2448)

SO CALM

A bright and colourful sunrise over the Rip at Point Lonsdale. The iconic pier points to the sun and the other side of the bay and the light shines back towards me, highlighting some of the rocks that form part of this coastline. It's not often that the sea is so calm at this notoriously dangerous stretch of water, so I was able to even capture a few reflections in the wet sand. (2447)

Back at the Edge of the World again, with threatening skies and a rugged shoreline, strewn with debris from around the globe. This is one of the most inhospitable places I've been to, but it has a beauty that is hard to describe. The sea was even angry when I was there, so I didn't venture too close to the water. (2446)

SPECTACULAR

No two mornings are the same when you are a photographer. Sometimes an early morning trip to the beach can result in a beautiful and colourful experience, and other times just a grey and boring disappointment. Even the great morning can be different, with a wide range of cloud formations to catch the colourful sunrise and produce an infinite number of scenes. That said, all I need to say today is that this formation of clouds was spectacular and well worth the effort of getting out of bed to capture it. (2446)

TWO FOR THE PRICE OF ONE

A quick edit tonight, some days just disappear quicker than others! This image is from my Wye River photo shoot and shows the sun just rising above the horizon, and reflected in the smooth and flat sand of the beach. There are even clouds reflected in the foreground. I do love this type of photo as I reckon you get two skies for the price of one. (2444)

A WIDER VIEW

On the long road to the west coast of Tasmania, there are a few areas where the National Parks gave way to open terrain, covered in long grass bushes and the occasional tree. At these spots, it was possible to see the tree covered mountains and appreciate the vista that is normally hidden by the forest. I particularly love these areas and enjoy being able to capture a wider view of the surrounding area. (2443)

RIPPLES IN THE SAND

The early morning light really highlights the ripples in the sand of Boat Harbour Beach. This amazing spot on the north coast of Tasmania has a perfect sandy beach one side and a rocky and rugged coastline on the other. I particularly love this side, along with the coffee I purchased at the cafe on the beach just a few metres away. (2442)

THE GRAVEL

The unique and infamous sporting oval at Queenstown has a gravel surface. The high rainfall in the region lead locals to fear a grass surface would quickly turn to mud, so gravel was used in the construction more than a hundred years ago. The Queenstown oval is loved by West Coasters and feared by visiting teams. The oval was inducted into Tasmania's Football Hall of Fame in 2007. (2441)

CLOUDS IN THE WATER

I love seeing the water turn to clouds when an early morning photo shot results in a very slow shutter speed for my camera. The movement while the shutter is open results in the blur that looks soft and cloud-like. Such was the case on the beach at Kennett River, along the Great Ocean Road. I still get excited when driving down this road and finding beaches that I haven't stopped at before. It will keep me busy for another decade or more if I am to visit each one. (2440)

RURAL SCENES

Late this afternoon I thought a trip up the Moorabool Valley might result in a few nice shots. There wasn't a lot of clouds in the sky, so I wasn't all that hopeful on the half hour drive from home. A little colour on the few clouds that were present made a pleasant view along the river, which didn't have a lot of water in it for this time of the year. I do like these rural scenes and the late afternoon sun warming the tops of the paddocks in the background made the excursion well worthwhile. (2439)

I COULDN'T AGREE MORE

THE FISHERMAN

The Jetty commemorates the local fisherman who started the fishing industry in Fremantle. The memorial incorporates 12 timber columns, the names of 608 fishermen who pioneered the industry in Fremantle, and two bronze sculptures.' [monumentaustralia.org.au] (2437)

A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE

Finding myself under a piece of street art at Docklands, I really enjoyed the amazing organic shape and the colours of the early morning experience. The Docklands area of Melbourne is very new and the high buildings overlooking the original docks of the city have an amazing view across the city. The wonderful artworks along the water's edge are in stark contrast to the concrete and glass structures behind them and provide a unique experience to visitors and photographers alike. (2436)

These rocks appear to be pointing to the sunrise. They are very flat on top but filled with small ponds of water, left by the receding tide. A photographer needs to be very nimble on his or her feet to avoid getting a boot full of water, speaking from an unfortunate experience! (2435)

AMAZING SCENES

When I visited Port Fairy, I had a great time walking along the river and capturing the boats and the amazing sunrise. A little later I ventured down to the beach, and although the colourful sunrise had gone, I was still able to find some amazing scenes, and shoot the wonderful sky, filled with moody clouds. Some grass for the foreground interest resulted in a very different beach scene. (2434)

ENDURING DIFFICULTIES

The ruggedness of the coast along the Great Ocean Road has been highlighted by me in a number of posts, but this photo shows exactly what I mean. The rocks are so sharp, and very unforgiving to a keen photographer trying to get the right angle in the early morning light. The leather on my strong working boots are very scuffed to prove the point. Sometimes though, the best in life is found by enduring difficulties, and I hope this also translates to photography (2433)

THE CLIFF EDGE

The outlook from The Crags is very desolate and completely covered with rocks and sand, but there is an occasional weather-beaten bush or tuft of grass to add a foreground attraction for a photograph. Such is the case in this image, with one tiny bush with white flowers growing on the cliff edge. (2432)

THE UNEXPECTED

Unlike my unbelievably bright photograph posted yesterday, today's image is very soft and subdued. I had hoped for a colourful sunrise when I visited the beach at Anglesea, but unfortunately, this was as good as it got. A slight pink tinge in the clouds was the full extent of the colour. Walking back, feeling a little sorry for myself, I passed dunes covered in various grasses and luckily had the foresight to take a few photographs of something I might not have seen, had I been thrilled with capturing a wonderful sunrise. Sometimes events transpire to produce the unexpected. (2431)

UNNATURAL

Every now and then I come across a sunrise that is almost unnatural. Such was the case recently when I visited Geelong's waterfront precinct. The sunrise was incredibly colourful and the water of the bay was so still. The reflections were nearly perfect, while the buildings appear silhouetted against the overly saturated sky. Don't you just love it when nature outdoes itself? (2430)
