The incredible Royal Exhibition Building is located in the Carlton Gardens on the edge of Melbourne's CBD. A number of fountains are dotted around the perimeter of the heritage listed building including this one at the side entrance. While the water wasn't running, the fountain is still impressive, particularly with the building behind it. (1028)

CREATE NEW LIFE

At the top of the river, the cruise boat docked at Heritage Landing and allowed us to walk along a winding track through the heritage listed wilderness. It was almost impossible to take a photo as the forest was so dense causing a lack of light. At one or two places a huge Huon Pine had fallen to the ground taking other trees with it and the lichen and moss had begun to break down the decaying timber and create new life for the next millennium. A LOVELY SURPRISE

ALMOST TRAPPED

I came close to getting trapped by a rising tide this morning. The narrow gap between the cliff on the left and the rock stack on the right is the only way back to the steps leading to the cliff top. The sunrise this morning was spectacular and I got carried away with taking photos of it and nearly didn't make it back ... I was lucky enough that the water across this gap was just low enough when the wave went back to let me jump over it, albeit getting wet boots. Note to self, check the tide times before venturing near the sea. (1025)

CRACKED ASPHALT SURFACE

It is hard to imagine that the small township of Daylesford ever needed a railway platform as long as this, but here it is in it's obvious state of disrepair. I love the large mosaic pattern of the cracked asphalt surface, exaggerated by the low angle of the early morning sun. This historic station is now home to a heritage railway run by volunteer enthusiasts. (1024)

The wonderful Sunnymead Beach is a photographers paradise, so many different views and angles that make you want to stay all day capturing natures beauty. Fortunately the lovely morning light didn't last all day so I came home via a local café where I had breakfast … one of my usual rewards for getting up so early. (1023)

At the recent historic Gulf Station open day I found this wonderful artist who hand paints old saw blades, milk tins, wine barrels and even plow discs. I asked him if he minded me taking the picture, which he didn't but commented that some people take photos of his work to copy it, something I reassured him I wouldn't and in fact couldn't do! I really admire this quality of work and have kicked myself since that I didn't buy the red milk tin with the old Arnott's Biscuits logo on it ... reminded me of my childhood. (1022)

Lovely swirls today, the waves were getting in the way of my image so I took a photo of them. The waves provided a great pattern as it flowed between the rocks at Cumberland River on the Great Ocean Road. (1021)

When I last visited Canberra, I took an early morning drive to the top of Mt Ainslie and was able to capture the city beginning to wake up on a cold Sunday morning. The most striking feature of this image is Anzac Parade, the red strip in the centre. It is 'a significant road and thoroughfare in the Australian capital Canberra, is used for ceremonial occasions and is the site of many major military memorials and is named in honour of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps of World War I' [Wikipedia] (1019)

I WAS THRILLED

This is a photograph of the oldest bridge across the Barwon River at Barwon Heads. It survived an attempt to be replaced a few years ago and luckily was given a face lift with a second walking bridge built alongside to make it safer for pedestrians and cyclists. This shot was taken in the early morning and I was thrilled to get a sunburst through the railings (as you might guess, it doesn't take much to thrill this photographer!) (1018)

I couldn't believe this pier on Georges Bay … it was in total disrepair with the end dipping down towards the water. Not safe at all, but on a positive note it provided a great backdrop to my photo today with it's reflections in the bay soon after sunrise. (1014)

Being an Australian Photographer in Scotland I found the light so hard to understand. Everything seems so much softer, and hard for me to brighten in post production to what I remember the scene to be. I really admire the Scottish photographers who can make their images come alive. I love this scene of Loch Ard but I just couldn't make it sparkle the way I know it was on the day. (1011)

Today I have a little more of Victoria's rugged coastline, part of the 'Shipwreck Coast' which claimed dozens of early sailing ships coming to and from Melbourne. The sea is relentless and the rocks are rugged and not having the navigation aides of today, it is no wonder so many ships and lives were lost. (1009)

UNUSUAL STRIPES

Today's image is of the unusual striped lighthouse in Devonport, on the north coast of Tasmania. The white and red really stand out against the blue sky as I expect they were intended to do. The lighthouse is located at Mersey Bluff which gives a great view of shipping coming in and out of the port, including the ferry that I took back to the mainland. (1007)

THE ROCK CIRCLE

This colourful rock circle is located near St Helens in Tasmania's east. With the tide receding a small pool of water is left behind to reflect the cloudy sky. I love the orange stains on the rocks that provide a wonderful contrast to the blue in the sky. (1006)

THE LOG BESIDE THE LAGOON

SO SOFT AND COLOURFUL

This image took 8 seconds to expose, which gives you an idea of how dark it was early on the morning I visited Point Lonsdale. I love this time of the day, generally there is little wind, there definitely isn't anyone around, except the odd pesky fisherman ... and I don't mean odd in the peculiar way, and the light is so soft and colourful. If only the whole day could be like this! (1004)

The beautiful Cape Nelson lighthouse is a great tourist attraction in Victoria's far west. On the road to the lighthouse I had the opportunity to use my new 70-300mm lens and at the long end it makes to road look so much shorter that it really is. (1002)
