The Maits Rest Rainforest Trail is wonderful, and a really lovely walk. Some of the track is dirt, but much of it is made up of boardwalks, as shown here. Portions of the walk are in dark, damp and spooky areas, while other parts have glorious sunlight filtering through the trees. It is really a mixture of everything a photographer could want, all in one great location. (2156)

Originally working on designing skate decks and local skate parks, Rone eventually moved on to producing massive murals towering over the city's streets. I WAS THE INTRUDER

Another image from my Lake Modewarre photoshoot. As I positioned my tripod in this long grass, I could hear creatures moving around. Not being too happy to encounter a snake, I remembered that this was the middle of winter, so I relaxed a little Then I heard the faint sounds of ducks, and guessed that I was in fact the one who was intruding on a secluded nesting area for the water fowl that live around this little lake west of Geelong. I stayed long enough to capture the image, then left the area so as to not distress the inhabitants any further. (2154)

FOG REDUCES VISIBILITY

LACK OF APPEAL

I'm not sure what to think of Lake Modewarre. It isn't all that attractive to look at. No trees, at least not on the eastern side where I visited. There are clumps of grass, like the one in this image and very wet and muddy soil underfoot all around the flat foreshore. There did appear to be a lot of bird life, particularly ducks, so despite it's lack of appeal for photographers the lake serves a genuine purpose in the natural world. (2151)

A MUST SEE

'Extending 1.8 kilometres over the protected waters of Geographe Bay, the heritage listed Busselton Jetty is the longest timber-piled jetty in the Southern Hemisphere. As one of the most popular tourist attractions in Western Australia, it is a must see for any visitor to the Capes Region.Construction of the Busselton Jetty began in 1865. Beginning as a mere 161 metres, sand drift resulted in an additional 131 metres being added in 1875. AMONGST THE GUM TREES

Driving home along the Hamilton Highway late in the afternoon, I stopped at a small reserve at Murgheboluc. In the paddock next door was a very small abandoned building on a tiny hill, in amongst the gum trees. It was the former St Andrews Anglican church and had also been the local school in the mid 1800's before a new school was built nearby in 1874. The sunlight steaming over the hill and casting long shadows was glorious and worthy of a photo or two. (2149)

WANT TO EXPLORE?

This amazing old tree at Maits Rest is hollow underneath. There appears to be a number of sections that have rooted themselves into the ground, but there is a lot of space in between where animals, and possible people have wandered and explored beneath, creating a mysterious tunnel. Makes you want to explore, doesn't it? (2148)

On Christmas Day 2015 on the town's darkest day in history a bushfire destroyed at least 98 homes in the town. At nearby Separation Creek another 18 homes were destroyed. NO MUSK DUCKS TODAY

A quick trip west of my home saw me watching the sunset over Lake Modewarre. This lake isn't all that spectacular, but the sunset was. I came home with a few nice images and boots covered in mud from the swampy area around the lake. I was worried about the road conditions so left my car at the entrance to the reserve and walked the rest of the way in to avoid getting the car bogged. I had never heard the meaning of Modewarre, so an internet search resulted in this:'Modewarre is the Wathaurong name for the Musk Duck. 'Warre' means sea or ocean.' 'Located near the mouth of Barwon River, Barwon Bluff Marine Sanctuary protects 17ha predominately composed of reef. The eastern half of the reef is basalt, formed from lava flow, and is exposed to the flow of the river. The western side is old sandstone and influenced by ocean swell. On the outer edges of the reef are the wrecks of two ships. The variation in conditions across the reef results in the presence of a huge diversity of plants and animals. DON'T GET TRAPPED

The cliffs along the Great Ocean Road are ever changing. The sea keeps encroaching the land with the result that the tall rock faces eventually give up and fall to the beach below, where the tides continue to dominate. I find that it is important to consult the tide times before venturing to some of these beaches so that I don't get trapped by the sea. Even though the tide had turned and was meant to be subsiding, I still had a difficult time passing this stretch of Addiscot Beach. (2144)

HUGE MOSS-COVERED TREES

PRESERVED

'The Noojee railway line is a closed railway line in Victoria, Australia. Branching off from the Gippsland line at Warragul station, it was built to service the timber industry in the upper Latrobe River area, transporting timber as well as providing a general goods and passenger service to townships in the area. The final section of the line between Neerim South and Noojee traversed increasingly hilly terrain and featured a number of large timber trestle bridges. Extensively and repeatedly damaged by bushfires over the years, the line was closed in the 1950s and dismantled. NONDESCRIPT BUSHES

A wonderful sunrise over the 'rip' at the entrance of Port Phillip. Although still reasonably dark, the contrasting sky provides a lovely backdrop to the iconic lighthouse that has stood guard over this dangerous stretch of water. The landscape is covered with hardy, but a little nondescript bushes that didn't want to stand still for me while I took their photo. (2135)

ANCIENT RAINFOREST

'On 26 November 1932 the Great Ocean Road route was officially opened by the Lieutenant Governor, Sir William Irvine. It was a sight to see with a procession of 40 cars and schoolchildren lining parts of the route.Road travellers during the early years paid a toll at gates at Eastern View, where a memorial arch was erected. Drivers paid two shillings and sixpence and passengers one shilling and sixpence. SEAWEED LITTER

This stretch of the Addiscot Beach has been fenced off to stop the public from accessing a conservation area. Seaweed has been deposited on the wire where the sea has had little regard for the conservation measures and gone past this man-made barrier. I thought it made for an interesting photograph, with the leaning posts and the seaweed litter being in sharp contrast to the beautiful sunrise in the distance. (2130)

WATER FLOWS

Just below the Silverband Falls, the river disappears and looks like this. The water must be travelling underground, although during wetter times, this dry creek bed would be flowing. There is evidence of the size of the water flows with the amount of logs and rocks that are strewn everywhere. I loved the colours of the rocks which ranged from yellow to pink, and wondered what the scene would be like at the end of winter. (2129)

WHALE WATCHING

'Almost every year between June and September, female Southern Right whales return to the waters of Warrnambool’s Logans Beach to calve. The whales often swim within a hundred metres of the shore. They can be viewed from a specially constructed platform in the sand dunes or from the beach. Southern Right Whales have been visiting Warrnambool for hundreds of years. BITTERLY COLD

It was bitterly cold this morning, with my weather app saying the temperature felt like 0.2C. I had planned a photographic trip to Addiscot Beach, a half hour drive from my home, so I stuck to the plan and braved the elements. It was so cold that at one stage the lens on my camera fogged up and had to be cleaned before I could continue. There was a reasonable sunrise for my trouble and I bagged a number of interesting shots, with this one being one of them. (2126)
